Confession # 4: I’m a Great Guest Speaker
Today I had the honor to speak at a local women’s retreat here in Cap Haitien. A few days ago when I asked what they wanted me to talk about, this is what they told me:
“We want you to talk about how women are supposed to act in the church, what their roles are in their homes, and how they can be better Christian wives and moms…all in one hour”
Seriously? Do you want me to go ahead and add the creation story and salvation to that as well or do you already have those covered? This is what the smart-alec me wanted to say, but didn’t. Instead I graciously smiled and replied:
“Out of all of those topics, is there a specific one you would like me concentrate on?”
“No,” the preacher responded rather bluntly, obviously not picking up on my facial cues that I seemed to think his array of topics for one sole lesson seemed rather obscure. “No, I’d like you to teach them all,” he concluded.
“In one hour?” I replied. Just checking.
“Wi,” he nodded.
We shook hands and said our farewells. End of discussion.
So today was the big day and it was actually pretty delightful. The room was rather hot and stuffy, but I only had three people fall asleep on me which is pretty miraculous down here! Hunter’s only criticism was my lavish amount of hand motions, but whatever! They are my signature style.
So next time you need someone to come speak at your women’s seminar on how “women are supposed to act in the church, what their roles are in their homes, and how they can be better Christian wives and moms…all in one hour,” I’m your gal!
